JOTA ESE || PAID IN STEAK

In the past, Day Old Records has been fortunate to receive new JOTA ESE tapes without much thought, warning, or expectation. After JOTA kicked me out of the Monster Island studio for “secretly recording and stealing information with my eyes”, I stopped asking the things a label would ask.

A while back, Gary Larkin told me that JOTA was working on a new tape called ‘Paid In Steak’ and it was being fast tracked to be the follow-up to this year’s SUPER DANK. As 2016 continued, we saw the release of three additional tapes but none was this supposed “fast tracked follow-up.”  I sent a note to Gary after the release of Problem/Passion expressing my confusion because Problem/Passion had been collecting dust the previous autumn and winter and I was wondering if Gary knew what “follow-up” meant. JOTA then fired Gary from the project on grounds of “he leaked, man” (Disclaimer: Gary Larkin is still employed by Day Old Records). When I recently received the artwork from Deathspan Studios I knew that it was actually happening; a trend I can be thankful for.

PAID IN STEAK or: “I Didn’t Make My Way to the Top of the Food Chain to be a Vegetarian” is the latest beat tape to be released by Day Old Records. Produced by JOTA ESE, the tape runs about 30 minutes and features additional production from the venerable Terry Larkin, his brother Gary Larkin, and DJ Diamond Nights. Vocal guests include frequent JOTA cohorts 50 Cent and Kanye West as well as Nipsey Hussle, Lil’ Wayne, the Clipse, Pharrell, and more! Major shout out to Cori McGuirk and Caroline Williams for the photos and Deathspan Studios for the ever-great art design, direction, and vision.

“We want more! We want more! We want more!” – Haroldy

“It’s all luv” – Gary Larkin

“Is a pig’s pussy pork, again? Of course we lounted for this.” – Wordsworth

24 HOUR DICK

JOTA ESE proudly presents his new tape 24 HOUR DICK. Displaying the most exciting lineup thus far, the guest features include appearances from T.I., Andre 3000, Rich Homie Quan, Desiigner, 50 Cent, Richard Swift, and more! Trilobite Donuts’ bagmen Terry and Gary Larkin, along with associate Dirk Berkelson, are all here in signature form; it swings, it slaps, it forms a circle..might lose my jacket and hit a solo. Who’s Dick, you might ask? Well I’m not sure, JOTA said it wasn’t about anybody in particular. It could be someone who’s a jerk all the time. It could be a penis; or it could be the soundtrack of a crazy day-in-the-life of #RichardHarper. It’s likely we’ll never know (unless JOTA comes unhinged on twitter again) and, yeah, I guess this means Paid In Steak is still on the way. S/O Ric at Deathspan Studios for the album artwork. 24 HOUR DICK clocks in at 20 min of pure lo-fi bliss and is available for free download/stream below.

“Kind of like finding your dad’s stash of Penthouse and Hustler magz, same smell and everything” – Wordsworth

“Who’s Dick?” – Curtis Jenkins

“Deathwish for America!” – Haroldy

U SAY PROBLEM / I SAY PASSION

Here it is, folks. Virgo Season is here and JOTA ESE has given us another reason to celebrate. Completed over a year ago, U SAY PROBLEM / I SAY PASSION has been sitting in limbo for no good reason other than that JOTA was saving it for something. I know I said Paid In Steak was coming soon, and it still might be, but right now we get this one. Fair. For the first time in a while, JOTA has seperated all the tracks (due to some pressure from DJ Diamond Nights and your’s truely). The new tape features guest appearances from Juelz Santana and Max B. S/O Tyler Davis for the artwork assist! Download/stream for free.

“I got a Passion, man..” – Haroldy

“Baker baker baker” – Wordsworth

“Aye, one time for Walter Gaybe. He’d be proud.” – Dirk Berkelson

EXOTIC DAVE

JOTA ESE comes from left field with a short tape he calls “EXOTIC DAVE.” Featuring guest appearances from Boosie, Kodak Black, and Marshawn Lynch (!), this is the prequel to the long awaited PAID IN STEAK tape – coming later this summer. In classic JOTA fashion, the production is assisted by OG Terry Larkin and was recorded at Monsta Island and Day Old Studio B. Dedicated in loving memory of Bob Goldstone. Download/stream the mini-tape for free. S/O Deathspan Studios for the cover!

“Who’s Dave?” – Curtis Jenkins

“Louuunted as always, looking forward to that Steak tape tho…” – Wordsworth
